Matt Walla (b. 1980) is a photographer based in Southern California. A graduate of Brooks Institute of Photography, Cum Laude, he brings a formal, considered eye to interiors and buildings, an outlook shaped in part by growing up around architecture: both his father and grandfather were architects.

Walla moved to California from the Pacific Northwest in 2003 and has spent the last two decades photographing for interior designers and architecture firms. Alongside his architectural photography practice, his fine art work follows the New Topographics tradition, using large-format 4x5 film to photograph the ordinary and overlooked rather than the iconic.

To date, he has four published books with three on vernacular architecture: Santa Barbara: At Home in Paradise, Casa del Herrero: The Romance of Spanish Colonial, and Spanish Colonial Style, all by Rizzoli New York. The Steedman Silver, a historical tome of handmade silver pieces, was published by Tailwater Press.

American Riviera, Walla's fifth book and first fine-art monograph, will be published by GOST Books in London in 2026. Over seven years, from 2019 to 2025, Walla walked the downtown neighborhoods of Santa Barbara, California, at dusk, often beginning at his own front door. The resulting photographs form a quiet study of a city better known for its sunny postcard identity than what began as an ordinary working town.

He lives in California with his wife Katharine, their son Doug, and cat, Kira.
