Josef Kun House
Los Angeles, California
Richard Neutra, Architect
Photography: Matt Walla
Richard Neutra designed this house for Joseph Kun of the Los Angeles Examiner, with Gregory Ain as collaborator. Completed in 1936 on a steep hillside near Laurel Canyon, it presents a closed face to the street and opens on the other side to terraces and views over Los Angeles. It was one of the first all-electric homes in the city, and it was also the house that launched Julius Shulman’s career as an architectural photographer. It is now a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument.
Matt Walla photographed the house for its owner after a restoration that returned it as closely as possible to Neutra’s original design. Furnished throughout with authentic period pieces, the interiors show the house much as it would have looked when Neutra finished it.
